Nornickel 85th Anniversary —
visual identity concept
about
In 2020, Nornickel marked 85 years. The design bureau I was part of entered the competition for the anniversary visual identity. The concept we proposed didn’t win — but I still ended up working on the souvenir merchandise. I even designed an AR experience for it. But that’s another story entirely.
Project specifics
Nornickel is currently Russia’s largest and one of the world’s leading producers of precious and non‑ferrous metals. The company places great value on its historical legacy, and an anniversary of this scale is a major media event in itself. As a result, the tender brought together an exceptionally strong lineup of participants.
Event branding
No matter the scale, an event is just a point on a timeline. Yet we see countless bold visual identities for occasions of all kinds – because a strong impression stays with you for years. The value of well‑made souvenirs — artifacts that carry that visual language – is rarely measured in money alone
design concept
The concept is built around a stylized grapheme of the anniversary number — 85 — simplified and reimagined. The mark incorporates imagery of the northern lights, a symbol of infinity, and the silhouette of the company’s main logo. The color palette draws from the corporate colors and remains largely monochrome at the sketch stage
applications
The concept was applied across a wide range of materials – paper, glass, metal, fabric – to demonstrate the mark’s versatility and manufacturability. Anyone who has designed for the real instead of the virtual world knows that material matters. A beautiful design that can’t be produced is simply meaningless
