Great Names
of Russia
about
In 2018, over 6 million Russians took part in the nationwide competition Great Names of Russia, which resulted in 44 airports being named after outstanding compatriots. In 2019, I was commissioned by Suvenir-Design to design a commemorative edition for the project — a publication dedicated to preserving the country’s historical memory. The book was intended as a gift edition — combining documentary value with a prestigious, high‑quality presentation format.
Project specifics
The book was intended as a gift edition — combining documentary value with a prestigious, high‑quality presentation format. That meant meticulous attention to every detail: from design development and illustration concept creation to rough prototyping of nearly every spread (with detailed briefs for the illustrator), as well as paper selection and post‑press finishing for the cover.

I also had to align the design with the existing visual identity of the Great Names of Russia competition. The result was a beautifully illustrated book — a keepsake, a commemorative artifact.
Art direction for illustrations
My role went beyond designing the publication with a complex modular grid tailored to the depth of each spread. I also developed rough collages for every spread – this was the primary approval stage. Only after the concept was signed off did the illustrator receive the brief and
begin work
Printing & post‑press finishing
The cover was white – which meant it had to be protected with lamination. The cover's typography was enhanced with selective UV varnishing – so that anyone holding the book can literally feel the names it contains. The paper was also chosen to ensure that all the halftones of the watercolor illustrations were faithfully reproduced
Structure & modular grid
In addition to the complex spreads for each airport, the book also included an infographic section and project background information. All of this had to be accounted for in the master layout – even at the sketch stage. Otherwise, the final layout stage would have risked significant
rework
